What Our Clients Say

The Rise of Cosmetic Treatments

Over the years there has been a considerable rise in cosmetic practices. Some procedures are misleadingly and incorrectly marketed as straightforward and superficial, when in fact they are invasive procedures that should not be undertaken without being fully informed.

As with all procedures, there is a great deal to consider before proceeding. All clinical practitioners owe their patients a duty of care, and they must obtain informed consent before promoting or undertaking any treatment.

Unfortunately with the informality and casual accessibility in which a great deal of cosmetic treatments is now offered and with the absence of stringent oversight and regulation of providers, many under-qualified and less scrupulous practitioners are offering treatment, with disappointing and often devastating results for clients.

    What is Informed Consent?

Simply put, informed consent is where you are fully and comprehensively informed about your treatment, this should include (but may not be limited to):

    • the necessity of the treatment
    • its suitability for you & potential alternatives
    • what your treatment entails – the process/potential further treatment
    • what to expect – not only in terms of results but comfortability levels/discomfort
    • cost transparency for the treatment in question and possible further treatment
    • what to expect
    • advice on the probability of its success/failure
    • problems that may arise/risks entailed
    • aftercare considerations

You should be advised if a particular procedure is perhaps beyond the experience or skill of your clinician and whether another professional is better suited to provide this.

The point of providing this information is so that you can make an informed decision on whether to undergo the procedure. You cannot provide consent if you have not been adequately informed about all the important factors relating to your procedure - hence why informed consent is vital legal prerequisite.

    Clinical Negligence FAQ’s

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that come in a variety of formulations depending on the area being treated – they provide effective and temporary cosmetic results. Fillers are used to address wrinkles, restore volume, minimise aging and generally to improve the quality of skin, promoting a fresher and smoother appearance.

They are very commonly used to create fuller lips and to shape facial contours, such as the cheeks, chin and nose and to address asymmetry.

As with all clinical treatments, there are risks entailed, including infection, presentation of lumps underneath the skin – where filler has collected, a generally uneven appearance under the skin, filler migration, scarring and in more serious cases, a blockage created in blood vessels which can cause necrosis or tissue death and even in some severe cases – permanent blindness.

Laser skin resurfacing reduces wrinkles and scars, evens out skin tone and treats discolouration, it can also remove noth benign and malignant lesions. The procedure utilises lasers or beams of light, that vaporise the outer layers of your skin and promote collagen production.

There are different lasers used for skin resurfacing. CO2 Laser Resurfacing uses short pulse light energy or continuous light beams, Erbium Laser Resurfacing removes moderate to deep lines and wrinkles and Fractional Laser Resurfacing utilises narrow columns of laser light. The outcome should be tauter skin, as collagen between the laser holes contracts.

The complications and risks associated with this type of treatment is Melia – small white bumps that can appear on the skin, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, reactivation of herpes simplex infections or cold sores, bacterial infections, swelling and scarring.

A chemical peel is a commonly practice cosmetic treatment, whereby layers of damage skin are peeled away to boost collagen production and to give a smoother and soft appearance. It is commonly used to address blemishes, pigmentation issues and signs of aging.

Newly uncovered layers of skin have greater sensitivity and this immature exposed skin can be more prone to infection.

The risks with this treatment include pain and irritation, blistering, burning sensations, redness of skin, permanent damage to the skin, discolouration and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and facial scarring – in some cases the damage is irreversible.

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery as it is commonly referred to by clients, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower lids.

The aim is to improve the appearance around the eye area, addressing loose or sagging skin – which may create folds or impact the natural contour of the upper eyelid. The procedure can also address fatty deposits or puffiness in the eyelids, bags under the eyes, drooping lids, excess skin and fine wrinkles.

Some patients undergo the procedure to correct functional problems with eyelids – the concerns detailed above can sometimes cause impaired vision.

A range of complications can arise with this procedure including bleeding, risk of infection, dry eyes, abnormal discolouration of the eyelids, scarring or an abnormal folding of the eyelid skin. Some clients have suffered with an inability or difficulty to fully close their eyes, a pulled-down lower lid lash line and in severe cases – a loss of vision.
